CHERISH (Cloud for HERitage – Image Sector Hub)

CHERISH is a 15-month European initiative led jointly by CEPIC and Photoconsortium to support the digital transformation of the photographic and image heritage sector.

Across Europe, archives, photo libraries and press agencies have made important progress in digitising collections. Yet many organisations, particularly smaller institutions, continue to face barriers to adopting emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Extended Reality (XR), 3D technologies and cloud-based infrastructure. Limited resources, uneven digital skills and uncertainty around implementation risk widening the gap between innovation and everyday practice.

CHERISH responds to this challenge by helping photographic heritage professionals understand, access and adopt new digital opportunities through the European Collaborative Cloud for Cultural Heritage (ECCCH), developed within the ECHOES project.

Through surveys, multilingual guidance, webinars and sector events, CHERISH will build awareness, strengthen digital skills and encourage responsible, sustainable use of new technologies across the image heritage community. By connecting European policy initiatives with practical tools and real-world applications, the project aims to ensure that organisations of all sizes can benefit from the next generation of cultural heritage infrastructure.

At its heart, CHERISH is about preserving Europe’s photographic heritage while empowering the sector with the knowledge, confidence and digital capabilities needed for the future.

This project has received support through a cascading grant from ECHOES, which is funded by the European Union under Grant Agreement No. 101157364, with the support of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) under the UK Government’s Horizon Europe funding guarantee No. 10110142 and No. 10110466.
