The feedback to the Beta launch the "Licensable Images Badge" has been overall positive. Amongst comments received:
- Impact on the implementation of the EU Copyright Directive? The development regarding the "Licensable Image Badge" is distinct from the debate on the implementation of the EU Copyright Directive (notably Art.15 and 17). Yet, by completing rights information for indexing purposes, it may be argued that rights holders are in fact fulfilling their duty under Art. 17- 4 b) to provide "relevant and necessary information" to the platforms to identify their content.
- Image press agencies v. stock agencies? The websites of press images is closed most of the time. The IPTC field shown since Autumn 2018 is therefore more relevant to them than indexing using schema.org. Besides press agencies have so far not been able to enforce that press publishers do not separate the metadata from the images. Progress in this area is necessary for the "Image Licensable Badge" to be effective.
- Google Stock? In a recent blog article Alexander Karst addresses the point whether Google is building a huge image database. He notes: "The Google Image Search will not be a stock agency. You can not even filter the images by this label."
