EPA Images celebrates decades of photojournalism at the ANSA80 Exhibition in the European Parliament

Strasbourg, 8 July 2025 – From the heartbreak of the refugee crisis to the global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, from world sporting triumphs to historic political moments: EPA Images has been there to capture the moments that shaped history. As ANSA, one of EPA Images’ founding shareholders, marks its 80th anniversary, EPA supported this Tuesday the celebration of an exhibition at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, to showcase, alongside the Italian news agency, decades of photojournalism that chronicle Europe’s and the world’s evolving story.

The ANSA80 Exhibition, titled “From the Treaties of Rome to artificial intelligence, images that tell how the world and Europe have changed”, features iconic photographs from both ANSA and EPA Images’ archives, offering a visual journey through decades of major global events. Around 40 of the images on display come from EPA’s collection.

“This exhibition is a call to our roots and an invitation to defend what we hold most dear: our freedom, our democracy. And we could never do that without a free and independent press”, said Roberta Metsola, the president of the European Parliament, during the inauguration of the exhibition.

For EPA Images, this event is more than a celebration of a valued shareholder: it’s a tribute to the enduring power of photography in telling the stories that matter.

“We are documenting a world in continuous transformation, facing tremendous challenges for smaller, yet passionate companies like ours: from market concentration to audience disengagement, from fake news to artificial intelligence. That's precisely why the cooperation that EPA embodies is more important than ever before”, said Julia R. Arévalo, President and CEO of EPA Images, during her speech. “It allows us to keep doing the good journalism our communities rely on, always adapting to new technologies and trends, but forever truthful to our core mission”, added.

With eight shareholder agencies across Europe, including ANSA, and a global presence, EPAImages remains a leading provider of independent photojournalism to audiences worldwide. This exhibition highlights the agency’s commitment to capturing the defining moments of Europe and the world while celebrating a shared legacy of impactful visual storytelling.

The inauguration of the exhibition gathered around one hundred attendees, including Stefano De Alessandri, CEO of ANSA; Antonella Sberna, Vice President of the European Parliament; Christian Mangold, Director-General for Communication of the European Parliament; Francesca Passamonti, Senior Director of European Regulatory & Public Affairs at Intesa Sanpaolo; and Andreas Schwab, Member of the European Parliament for Germany.

The ANSA80 exhibition is open to visitors at the Emilio Colombo Space in the European Parliament in Strasbourg until July 11. It takes place during the last plenary session of the European Parliament before the summer break.
