CEPIC Responds to the European Commission’s Copyright Consultation

CEPIC has submitted its response to the European Commission's Call for Evidence on the Targeted Initiative for a Better Copyright Environment for European Creativity and Innovation, contributing to the ongoing review of the Copyright in the Digital Single Market (CDSM) Directive. Representing hundreds of picture libraries and agencies across Europe, the submission highlights the growing challenges that generative AI poses for the visual media licensing sector and calls for practical measures to protect creators' rights.

The submission sets out recommendations to strengthen copyright protections for visual works, including more effective opt-out mechanisms for AI training, the preservation of rights-management metadata, greater transparency for rightholders, and clearer rules on the use of copyrighted works in AI systems. These proposals aim to support a functioning licensing market while ensuring that innovation develops alongside respect for intellectual property.

CEPIC's full submission is available to read via the attached document.
