Excerpt:

The micro-stock business model has made a fascinating ascension to its status as a true force in the stock photo industry, fascinating because it epitomizes the crowd-sourcing democratization of many businesses thanks to the Internet and, in this case, digital photography. One couldn’t help sensing micro-stock shook the foundations of the old guard, even as the biggest companies in the business sought to embrace the model in an “if you can’t beat’em, join’em” approach. Getty, as the industry leader and one of only a few publicly traded (at that time) companies in the business, provided a picture of the ill effect this low-cost alternative has had, at least in part, on growth in their traditional creative stills image businesses.
