PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION & WORKSHOP
Photographer Ladislav Bielik (his son Peter Bielik)

The Story of A Picture and of the Spring of Bratislava 1968

On 21 August 1968, the Soviet tanks roll into Bratislava. Photographer Ladislav Bielik makes photos and he shoots the photo of a man bearing his chest to a tank gun. Thanks to student Lutz who gets hold of the picture (published in the daily Smena on 22.8.1968) and brings it to DPA under his own name, the photograph makes it to the west and to the rest of the world, wins awards and is widely published as one of the greatest pictures of the 20th century; yet the negative remains at home and the true photographer never gets credited. It is only years later, after his death, once the Eastern block has fallen apart, that his son Peter Bielik takes over for the memory of his father and fights for the acknowledgement of ownership and copyright on the picture. In 2005, a first copyright case is won at the regional Court of Frankfurt/ Main.

The exhibition evokes the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia and the confrontations of Bratislava, with as centerpiece the word famous photograph.
On Saturday 07 June from 14.30 h to 15.00 H, Peter Bielik himself will tell the true story of a picture and of the Spring of Bratislava 1968 (CDC 2, Level 2)

FILM "La Rue Zone Interdite/ Off Limits"
Canadian, French with English sub-titles

In Canada, the US and France, cases being brought before the courts are increasing in frequency. Documentary films and still pictures are being threatened by rulings like that of the Supreme Court of Canada? The Street Off Limits is attempting to explain this trend and some of its absurd ramifications.

Filmed in Canada, the US and France, a variety of photographers are asked to share their experiences, including William Klein, Marc Riboud, Willy Ronis, Janine Niepce and Elliott Erwitt. Editors, reporters and legal experts are also sharing their misgivings about this trend.

"Off Limits is a heartfelt and eleoquent piece of film making. It makes its case in the defense of street photography. The issue is not the right to one's image, but the right to access our own history and the colourful people who make it.

PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION
Sponsored by the European Union

Facing Future Challenges through Inter-Cultural Dialogue - A Photographic Exhibition -
To Commemorate the European Year of Inter-Cultural Dialogue in Europe, the European Commission Representation in Malta is organising a Photographic Exhibition under a number of different themes. The main theme as the name of the exhibition implies is European Intercultural Dialogue. The cross cutting themes and Categories are the following:

(A) Cultural Landscapes
(B) Natural Landscapes
(B) Climate Change and Global Warming
(C) Inter-Cultural dialogue – general theme

The Exhibition was open to everyone but all photographic works had to be taken in Malta. The EU Representation in Malta decided to hold this event in order to promote and celebrate inter-cultural dialogue between the ever increasing presence of different minority cultures and the beauty of diversity in Malta, while in the meantime promoting as well the art of photography.

The EU representation in Malta also took the opportunity to open and hold this exhibition during the CEPIC Congress which this year will convene in Malta. Through these contributions we would like to present our colleagues a different glimpse of Maltese life that during their stay, that delegates might have not enough time to note and enjoy. The Exhibition will be hosted at the Ministry of Tourism at the Auberge d’ Italie and will be opened on the 6th of June 2008 at 18.00 hours.

The Exhibition will be inaugurated and opened by the Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism, Dr Mario De Marco.

CEPIC Delegates are warmly welcome to the opening on Friday 6 June at 18.00 H.
Transportation for CEPIC Delegates will leave at 18.00 H in front of the entrance to the Eden Arena.
