Lietzenburger-Strasse 91A CEPIC 2007 Seminar presented by Dr Shahidul Alam
Study (D. Clark 1993 & 2003) has shown that upward of 90% of the images of the developing world are taken by white non-indigenous photographers, either in-country staff of development organisations or commissioned photographers sent in-country by the ‘western’ media.
There is intense frustration in the developing world that their “image” is shaped in this way, the developed world receiving a one dimensional view driven by a (negative) news agenda or the need to raise money.
This imbalance requires more realistic, more complete information sourced by local photographers who know the people, are of the culture, understand the language and the underlying causative effects of each situation. Local knowledge provides the best position from which to tell the story, their story, in a balanced way.
