ByCharles SwanThe "Morel" decision, eye witness photos on Twitter and the media: Photographer Daniel Morel was awarded summary judgment last week in New York in his ongoing copyright infringement claim against Agence France Presse, Getty Images and the Washington Post.
AFP and the Washington Post will have to pay him damages after using his tweeted photographs of the Haiti earthquake three years ago without a licence. Whether Getty is also liable remains to be determined. AFP and the Washington Post (and Getty, if ultimately found liable) might have to pay statutory damages of up to $1.2m, but not the tens of hundreds of millions of dollars Morel argued he was entitled to claim.

In Hamburg on 29.11.12 the BVPA organized PICnight Vol 4 which was hailed a great success. There were over 40 participants including photographers, picture agencies, and photo editors from across the city.
The Subject was "The intellectual property rights on Internet piracy" with Dr. Peter Richter, copyright and media lawyer for Kanzlei KSP. The discourse was both emphatic and dynamic, highlighting the need to assert legal requirements on the internet, constructively and critically.
The second part of the evening consisted of a first-class finger food buffet and some glasses of wine or beer, where the participants exchanged experiences on the picture market and took the opportunity to make new contacts and meet colleagues.

London CEPIC week closed on an absolute high on Friday night with an amazing Annual Industry Party sponsored by Corbis at Somerset House where delegates were able to enjoy a fabulous exhibition organised by the prestigious World Photography Association.
The resounding message coming back from this year's Congress was how great it had been for business! In a week that saw more economic crisis and concern in the Eurozone, it was wonderful to hear how much business had been done - new and old - and how delegates were delighted to meet so many people in one place.

ByDavid Price-HughesNext week, over six hundred picture professionals will descend on East London for this year’s CEPIC Congress. Stock agencies will rub shoulders with heritage libraries, RM will square up to RF, and this year, more than ever, footage will sit next to still photography.
Rather than events like fotofringe and Visual Connections, which attract picture buyers, the CEPIC Congress is speed dating for picture archives. We rekindle relationships with existing suppliers and agents, strike up some new friendships and flirt with the competition.

The PICTAday 2012 – organised by the German Association of Picture Agencies (BVPA) - was held in Munich on 22 March. Sylvie Fodor, Executive Director of CEPIC attended the event.
She says: "It was a very pleasant event, very well organised from BVPA, well attended by picture buyers across Germany (and with good food too!). This feeling was shared with all the participants I talked to. Picture Buyer Fairs, such as the NLimage Fair last October or the up-coming Fotofringe in London on 26 April are key to the business of picture agencies and libraries.

Shortly before Christmas the time is running fast for organising the 2012 CEPIC Congress in London May 15-18.
The CEPIC Sub-Committee is concentrating its work on the Truman Brewery (sorry, no more beer produced there) - one of the most exciting places for the New Media people in the City, to make the yearly event a success for the participants from all over the world.

ByAlan SmithOne answer to those people who say Congress is expensive is this breakdown for the CEPIC Congress in London 2012:
There are 40 half hour meetings possible during the allocated table times.
For a UK delegate paying 400€ congress fee that is 10€ a meeting.
For a UK delegate plus a table that is 800€, 20€ for a meeting.
For an overseas delegate paying on average 400€ for a hotel for 4 nights, 400€ for rail or air fare, 400€ for table and 400€ congress fee, all totalling 1600€, that is 40€ per meeting.
What a bargain compared to the cost of travelling around the world for 40€ one to one meetings.

CEPIC now has its own private network, reserved to CEPIC members for exclusive information.
This is done thanks to a Yammer account. It works like Facebook, only better because it is a private network (no confidentiality issues ...).
We will use it to post CEPIC news, including documents, get feedback, in short improve communication with our members.
Write to Sylvie Fodor if you want to get an invitation.
This service is for CEPIC members only!
