Ted VanCleave, ImageRights International
ByTed VanCleaveThere are various ways of affording some form of protection to your images.
As a professional photographer, I depend significantly upon my website to sell my images.
This is part for the course for many photographers and artists. But there's a dark side to free distribution: piracy is rampant. Unfortunately, it's easy for anyone with a computer to steal content-- but not so easy for the copyright owner to monitor unauthorized usage and recover lost income.

ByCharles SwanTemple Island Collections v New English Teas. Can the copyright in a photograph be infringed by shooting a similar photograph?
The answer to this question has generally been thought to be yes. In the first UK judgment directly on this point the Patents County Court has confirmed this.
His Honour Judge Birss QC decided that a photograph of a red London bus against a black and white background of Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, with a blank sky, was similar enough to another photograph of the same subject matter to infringe copyright.
The two photographs are reproduced in the judgment and can also be seen here.

Luke Hayes is an independent architectural photographer. His work has been published in a range of national and international titles, including The Guardian, New York Times, Blueprint and Architectural Review, and Abitare.
Photographs of snow on an anonymous neighbourhood, or on a line of milk vans waiting at the depot, tap in to the same myth of big-city American culture as the films of Wim Wendrs- like his work, the images here share some of that alienated fascination of a European looking through a lens in to a very different yet strangely familiar, urban landscape. - Sarah Simpkin
