On
both banks of the river Elbe lies Dresden, a city of 500,000 inhabitants,
now the capital of Saxony in Germany. With a pleasant location and a mild
climate as well as Baroque style and numerous museums and art collections,
Dresden has been called "Elbflorenz", Florence on the Elbe. An architectural
gem since the 17th century, Dresden is also very green, with 63% of the city
being parks, gardens and forest. The Dresden Elbe Valley has preserved its
happy blend of nature and architecture through to the present day and was
granted world heritage status by the UNESCO in 2004. Dresden emerged as a major European crossroads in culture, science and technology in the 17th century and remained a leading city in these fields until WWII. Almost completely wiped out in three days of bombing on February 13th, 14th and 15th 1945, Dresden became a major industrial centre in the German Democratic Republic. Many important historic sites were rebuilt, including the Semper Opera House and the Zwinger Palace, while residential areas were constructed in "modern socialist-style". Since the reunification of Germany in 1990, Dresden has undergone major renovation. The reconstruction of the Frauenkirche is one of the most impressive achievements, transforming the ruins of February 1945 into a complete and historically faithfull rendition of the church as it stood in 1743. Therein lies the fascination of Dresden, a regional town symbolising the trials and tribulations of German history since the 17th century : the splendors of the Enlightment, the industrial and cultural heights of the 19th and 20th centuries, the wounds of WWII, the contradictions and delusions of two dictatorships and the rebirth of German reunification. CEPIC Congress will take place in the Congress Center of the Maritim Hotel International Congress Center Dresden. Directly located on the banks of the river Elbe, 10 minutes on foot to the center of Dresden, near the "Zwinger", the "Semper Oper" and the "Frauenkirche". |
